FOOD & FARM ROAD TRIP

Second & Third Session – On the Road

Many years of overwhelming camper, parent and staff requests for a new, outstanding program have culminated in our newest program, the 2017 Food and Farming Road Trip, specially designed for rising 10th graders.  Due to incredibly high demand, there will be two Road Trips in Summer 2017, one in the exact timeframe of the second session and one in the exact timeframe of third session.

RoadTrippers will travel aboard a coach bus and immerse themselves in the food culture spanning several states. They will spend time on small-scale organic farms, large-scale mono-crop farms and even urban farms, learning, evaluating the absorbing the food ethos of the region. Each visit will focus on hands-on projects involving harvesting, pruning, animal husbandry, seeding and other related activities. Soup kitchens, food pantries and lending a hand to communities in need will focus prominently in the itinerary as a way to bring our Jewish heritage to life and a means of bringing our vibrant Eden Village culture of kindness and social justice on the road.
These experiences will spiral as RoadTrippers also learn and discuss relevant Jewish texts and values, and consider how these philosophies inform their understanding of the ecological, socioeconomic and cultural qualities of each place they stop. Differing approaches to environmental issues adopted by various Jewish communities will be of interest as well. Most nights the RoadTrippers will camp, learning a variety of wilderness skills and helping prepare farm fresh, organic food over the campfire. Every Shabbat during the Road Trip will encompass the vibrant Eden Village spirit of song, prayer and meaning in various Jewish communities along the way. Check out the Food & Farm Road Trip Webpage for more details!

Project Pizza – On the Road & at Camp

Head out into the community to get involved, give back, and participate first hand in the local food system by making and selling hand-crafted, organic, kosher, farm to table pizza with Eden Village’s Project Pizza Road Trip. Wrestle with issues of food justice and access in our urban communities, and experience first hand the microcosmic journey of pizza from farm to table – visit a local dairy to make cheese, learn about local flour milling, harvest veggies, perfect your dough and sauce recipes, and finally put on pop up wood-fired pizza truck stands in several local communities. Based at Eden Village Camp, participants will venture out to pop-up their pizza truck at farmer’s markets and urban streets in the Northeast to give back and bring to fresh, tasty, organic, made-from-scratch food to our local communities.

Camperships

Eden Village Camp is committed to making camp affordable for as many young people as possible. Our goal is to make camp work for your family. Camperships (as we call financial aid) provide some assistance to families for whom payment of full tuition is not possible. The amount awarded is decided on the basis of need (as documented on the Campership Application and tax returns for all parent/guardians) as well as the availability of funds. Our Campership Committee has tried to make the process as easy, confidential, and fair as possible. Campership applications will not be considered without the $500 deposit, which is fully refundable if we are not able to provide enough aid.

If this deposit amount poses an obstacle, call us at 845-809-0080.

Things to Know about Financial Aid

  • The priority deadline for the application is November 12th. The regular deadline is March 21. All applications received after March 21 will be reviewed on a rolling basis as long as funds remain available.
  • The Campership application is not an application to Eden Village Camp. You must fill out the Eden Village Camp application online, in addition to the online Campership Application.
  • Your application is not complete and will not be considered until we also have your $500 deposit and the most recent tax return for all parent/guardians. Please upload those documents directly into the financial aid application.
  • Our goal is to notify applicants as soon as we can. For applications submitted by November 12th, we will notify applicants by January 6th. For applications submitted between November 13th and March 22nd, we will notify you on a rolling basis, and by April 15th at the latest. After March 21, we will review applications and notify applicants on a rolling basis, unusually within three weeks.
  • If you do not receive enough financial assistance to enable your family to attend camp, you can cancel from camp within 10 days of being notified and receive a 100% refund of all fees paid, including your deposit.
  • Any Campership applications submitted after March 21 will be considered once grants have been made to all applications received prior to the deadline.
  • FOR JOURNEY CAMPERS: To ensure scholarship funds are available for all campers, scholarships for journey campers are restricted a maximum of 25% of tuition less discounts.
  • There is no cap on financial aid for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd sessions.
